Small Actions, Big Movements: International Conference on Nonviolence

Small Actions, Big Movements: the Continuum of Nonviolence - International Conference of WRI
July 4-8, 2014

Cape Town, South Africa

In an historic conference to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, War Resisters International (WRI) will be convening a conference on "Small Actions, Big Movements: the Continuum of Nonviolence". While we recognize that at times our demonstrations and campaigns start small, they can have wide effects when we work together

From the historic struggle against apartheid, South Africans along with international supporters have gained the experience to speak on a range of global challenges. The post-apartheid problems of the country, however, also require a revival of civic struggle. WRI's venue for the July conference - the very City Hall where Nelson Mandela chose to address the world in his first hours after release from 27 years behind bars.

This is planned to be a Pan-African meeting - not limited to participants from Africa, of course, but placing African movements and activists at its centre, both as organisers and as participants.

Global Forum on Migration & Development (GFMD)

Stockholm, Sweden

The Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) is a initiative of the United Nations Member States to address the migration and development interconnections in practical and action-oriented ways. It is an informal, non-binding, voluntary and government-led process that marks the culmination of more than a decade of international dialogue on the growing importance of the linkages between migration and development. It reflects the progressive acknowledgement of the limits of a strictly national approach to migration questions and implications at global level in an intergovernmental framework. In view of the societal implications of these issues, civil society representatives have also been involved from the outset in this process.

When:  Friday, 11. April,  08:30-10:00
Where:  Litteraturhuset (Wergelandsveien 29), "Kverneland" Room, Oslo

On April 27th, 1994, South Africans of all ethnic backgrounds were given the historic right to vote for their future as the apartheid regime fell. On May 7th this year, South Africans are again going to the polls though in a different political climate from 20 years before. Churches and civil society are increasingly criticizing the African National Congress (ANC)-led government of straying from their original vision of justice for all.

This breakfast seminar will explore power, democracy, and justice issues in current South Africa.
