Karibu Seminar: Tourism and Globalization

Travel and Globalisation:  The Impact of Tourism on Global Peace and Justice

Globalization Conference / Norwegian Social Forum
Folkets Hus, Oslo, Norway

10:00 am - 11:30 am

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the tourism industry, and many governments claim that tourism is ‘a motor for development’; that it contributes to poverty alleviation and peacemaking in developing countries.  But how do the poor and marginalized really benefit?  And how can our choices reinforce the control of narratives and power norms on the ground, often exacerbating conflicts?  This seminar will explore these challenges of an expanding tourism industry, and how we, as tourists, impact global justice and peace worldwide.
