New applicant / have not previously received grant from Karibu?

Karibu currently does not have any open calls for applications for new grantee partnerships.

We have a limited number of smaller, “new partnership grants” – where applications for consideration are accepted by invitation only. If you would like to inform us about a specific project or initiative that you think is relevant (and fits the eligibility criteria and focus of Karibu’s standard grants), you are welcome to fill out a short note of interest within Karibu’s grantmaking system (details below).

Current / previous grantees can find more information about grant programs below.

Our approach

Global South led

Global South led

Karibu supports activities and movements that are anchored in the Global South (Africa, Asia, Latin-America, Middle East).

Systemic focus

Systemic focus

Karibu prioritizes projects that have a systemic focus – where change affects how the whole system functions.

Collaborative movement building

Collaborative movement building

Karibu prioritizes projects that are South-South in nature (one or more countries or territories in collaboration).

Eligibility

In order to apply for this grant program, your group (social movements, associations, organizations, cooperatives, collectives, and/or networks) must:

  • Be based in Asia, Latin America, Middle East, or Global / be anchored in the global South
  • Have particular focus on the root causes of injustice, and how systems are interconnected (systemic approach)
  • Have a non-violent approach
  • Have a plan and provide a jointly-decided upon concept note (maximum 10 pages) or optional video application describing your initiative
  • Provide a simple budget draft to help us understand how the funds are expected to be used
  • If your group is not registered, this is not a problem. We will just need a registered fiscal sponsor who can potentially receive and financially administer the funds. We are also open to hearing alternative models.
What we generally don’t support
  • For-profit and/or income-generating efforts
  • Government programs
  • Infrastructure (homes, buildings, etc)
  • Humanitarian aid (food, water and sanitation, school kits, disaster relief, etc.)
  • Capital investments (farm equipment, livestock, computers, etc)
  • Individual scholarships
  • Karibu does not give support to the regular operation of development projects, such as health, education, infrastructure, agriculture and/or local capacity building.
  • In most cases, we do not provide support to projects that are working only nationally or locally in scope.
  • As a general rule, we do not provide support to organizations or networks that are based in the Global North.

Practical Info

Grant size

Grants in our standard grant program range from 5,000 USD to maximum 20,000 USD annually.

Duration of the initiative

Karibu is open to supporting initiatives for up to 24 months.

Core Costs

Grants for Asia, Latin-America, Middle East and Global processes are generally flexible, allowing up to half of the funding to be used for core costs such as salaries, office rent, and insurance. This flexibility is aimed to support movements as they make decisions that best align with their unique needs and priorities.

What’s changed from our previous grants?

The grant application and materials are inspired by and drawn from Karibu’s participatory grantmaking efforts with movements in the Global South over the past few years. We have extended the option for longer-term funding support, now up to 24 months. While the maximum annual grant is now USD 20,000 to allow us to support more groups, we have made the budgets significantly more flexible, with up to half available for core support (salaries, office rent, insurances, group care, etc).

Deadline

The deadline for applications is in March, May, August, and October.
