Seminar: Shrinking Space for Civil Society and Human Rights Defenders

October 12, 2018 @ 12:00 - 13:30 CEST

Human rights defenders, environmentalists, community leaders and student activists around the world are subjected to persecution, violence, surveillance, and criminalization. This is not new, but there is growing concern that social movements and civil society’s room for action, both internationally and locally, is getting smaller. In other words, the room is closing and the space is shrinking.

We have gathered activists from different parts of the world and representatives from international organizations to illustrate this, from both global and local levels. What experiences do activists from different parts of the world have? How does one continue to work despite oppression? And how can activists, civil society representatives and human rights activists from different parts of the world work together to create conditions that preserve and extend the room for action for themselves and others?

With: Tetet Nera-Lauron, (Coordintor for Peoples’ Movement on Climate Change), Carlos Fernandez (Inter-Church Justice and Peace Commission), Pablo Neri from Pará, Brasil (MST), Lindah Chido (Students at risk)

Seminar hosted by: Peace Brigades International, Karibu, LAG, SAIH

The seminar is part of the program for the 2018 Globalization Conference / Norwegian Social Forum in Oslo, and you will need a ticket to the conference to attend. Tickets are available now, both in the form of a conference pass or day pass.
