Human rights defenders, environmentalists, community leaders and student activisits around the world are subjected to persecution, violence, surveillance, and criminalization. This is not new, but there is growing concern that social movements and civil society's room for action, both internationally and locally, is getting smaller. In other words, the room is closing and the space is shrinking.
